JANET MAYA Women/Strength/Beauty

December 5, 2021 – February 28, 2022

Janet Maya’s paintings interconnect a personal exploration of gender, sexuality, and social tension as it pertains to womanhood, orientation, and motherhood. Maya juxtaposes rich black, brown, and white silhouettes against a colorful background. Texture is added to give a tactile quality to the figures and form is edited down to pure expression. These nearly faceless figures evoke questions about identity and characteristics behind facades, while revealing the strength and beauty of women in connection to one another and reflecting joy and affection.
